Keep That Salon Glow: How To Care For Hair After Keratin Treatment
Keratin treatment is one of the best ways to straighten damaged or frizzy hair without using heat. But to make that salon glow last longer, you need to know how to care for your hair after a keratin treatment.
As with any beauty treatment, what you do when you leave the salon is crucial to keeping that look.
A Brazilian keratin treatment will give you the hair you’ve always wanted, but if you don’t look after it properly, then the effect can soon wear off.
Your therapist should offer you some keratin treatment aftercare instructions, like:
- When to wash your hair after keratin treatment (How many days after)
- How to wash your hair after keratin treatment (instructions)
- How to care for your hair after keratin treatment (products you need)
Let me start with the basics …
Do No Wet Your hair In The First 3 Days !
Avoid water on your hair for 3 days after the treatment. You can’t wash it or even get it wet at the swimming pool. Avoid workouts and sweating too much in those days, so no gym class either.
Let me explain why …
Water washes away the protein when it’s malleable, which could leave nasty streaks or marks in your hair. Not being able to wash your hair for three days sounds awful, but you don’t have to walk around feeling gross !
Luckily You Can Use A Dry Shampoo
A dry shampoo, applied to the roots of your hair will soak up all the dirt and oil, and leave you feeling clean, without violating the no-wet rule. Just make sure you use the powdered version of dry shampoo, not the liquid.
Get The Right Shampoo (Sulphate-Free)
When you do get past the first 3 days, use a sulphate-free shampoo.
Failing to stick to this advice will give you unpleasant side effects like:
- Dry scalp
- Uneven hair
- And hair breakage
And to make it worse …
Sulphates also strip keratin from your hair.
Lay Off The Hair Accessories
Avoid using hair clips, doing ponytails, or any extreme styles with hair accessories. These will leave kinks and lines in your hair.
Wait for the keratin to settle in properly before you do so. I’ll suggest you wait for a week at least.
Break Out The Silk Pillowcases
It may sound a little extravagant, but there’s a good reason to invest in a silk pillowcase. Silk is an excellent material for tangle-prevention as it offers less friction with hair follicles. Using a silk pillowcase after a keratin treatment will leave your hair looking better when you wake up and you won’t need to spend as long untangling it.
Avoid The Hair Loss Horror !
There have been some high profile stories of keratin treatments that went wrong, leading to hair loss and breakage.
The main reason for this is the use of formaldehyde.
As long as your keratin treatment did not contain formaldehyde (and you should always ask your therapist about this before undergoing any keratin treatment), then you are unlikely to have any significant problem.
If you still are worried about breakage, here are some things you can do.
- Use the Lanza keratin healing oil
- Avoid using hair straightening irons which can make your hair brittle
- Avoid harsh shampoos
- Stop using colouring products
- And look after the ends of your hair
Remember, the ends are the weakest parts of your hair and they need extra care and attention.
You’ll love keratin treatments.
Once you get into the swing of things, maintaining it becomes second nature.
Caring for your hair after a keratin treatment is easier than you think. And best of all, you’ll learn to use better products (chemical-free) for your hair.Follow my blog with Bloglovin
